Per la famiglia Berta la distillazione è più di un mestiere: è rispetto per il proprio territorio, è arte e attività imprenditoriale che tiene conto dei valori sociali come il concetto di benessere aziendale. Una tradizione più che centenaria quella dei Berta (dal 1866 per la precisione prima come azienda vitivinicola e poi come distilleria) nella nobile arte della distillazione ma soprattutto una visione imprenditoriale che tiene conto dei valori sociali e del profondo rispetto del proprio territorio che furono i dettami ideali dell’idea, troppo avanguardistica per essere compresa nell’Italia degli anni Cinquanta, di fare impresa di Adriano Olivetti.
Chicco Berta e il fratello Gianfranco (scomparso nel 2016) e l’intera famiglia con l’ultima generazione, tutta al femminile, rappresentata dalle figlie Annacarla e Giulia, hanno in comune con il visionario ingegnere di Ivrea soprattutto l’attenzione al concetto di benessere aziendale inteso come funzione sociale. Fra le firme storiche della grappa italiana (termine finalmente tutelato dalla Ue come distillato di vinacce esclusivamente italiche) Berta nella persona di Paolo, papà di Enrico detto “Chicco” e Gianfranco detto “Gian”, detiene la primogenitura della grappa invecchiata in legno, ideata come esperimento personale e, al tempo stesso, come espediente per superare un momento critico, quello dell’immediato dopoguerra in cui prezzi erano troppo bassi per recuperare i costi di produzione.
Fu così che Paolo Berta, fresco diplomato in enologia nella prestigiosa scuola di Alba, fece come faceva col vino buono, lo mise in botte aspettando tempi migliori donando ai suoi distillati i profumi e i sapori dei legni in cui aspettano pazienti lo scorrere del tempo.
Il color ambra è diventato così il marchio di fabbrica delle distillerie Berta (anche se non mancano grappe giovani e bianche di pregio come quella di moscato) e la stessa cantina di invecchiamento rappresenta una chicca della nuova distilleria, trasferitasi nel 2009 da Nizza Monferrato a Mombaruzzo, in un bel edificio stile cascina piemontese costruito con un encomiabile rispetto dell’impatto ambientale e del contesto architettonico del territorio.
Oggi, con l’ingresso dei 12 ettari in pancia alla Krause Holdings, la Vietti, che produce 250 mila bottiglie annue in 34 ettari (in parte in affitto), potrà vantare, oltre alle etichette (d’autore) che già possiede, una serie di menzioni della Docg Barolo tra le più note: Codana (Castiglione), Briccolina, Meirame, Teodoro e Cerretta (Serralunga), Mosconi e Le Coste (Monforte).
